Therapeutic Support
A Psychotherapeutically Informed Approach to Parent and Infant Wellbeing.

For the Emotional Challenges of Early Parenthood.

The arrival of a baby is a joyful and exciting time, yet the early months of parenthood can also feel overwhelming, confusing and emotionally intense.
Many parents find themselves struggling with unexpected worries or difficulties in their relationship with their baby. It can feel like holding up a mirror to deeply buried emotions.
These experiences are far more common than many people realise...
At The Perinatal Clinic, I offer therapy sessions for parents alongside their babies, providing a supportive and reflective space to explore the early parent–infant relationship.
The aim is to deepen an understanding of the emotional experiences of both parent and baby, helping to strengthen connection and support healthy development.

Parents may seek support for a range of concerns, including birth trauma, difficulties with bonding and attachment, feeding or sleep challenges, feelings of anxiety or depression following the birth of a baby, or worries about their child’s development. Therapy can also be helpful when the transition to motherhood or fatherhood feels particularly difficult or when past experiences begin to affect the present relationship with your baby.

By thinking together about what may be happening beneath the surface, therapy can help parents better understand their baby’s emotional world while also finding space to reflect on their own feelings and experiences - both past and present. The aim is to strengthen the parent–infant bond, leading to a greater sense of confidence and connection within the early relationship.

About Parent-Infant Psychotherapy
The Importance of Early Intervention
The first years of a child's life are crucial to their development and mental health. Parent-Infant Psychotherapy (PIP) highlights the importance of bringing the baby or young child into the therapy alongside the main caregiver(s) or parent(s). In the early years of a child's life (0-3) the brain develops more quickly than at any other time and millions of new neural pathways are created every second (neuroplasticity). This has implications on how your baby perceives its world during this time and can affect the quality of their ability to regulate emotions. This period can equally allow for good ego stability and develop the blueprint for positive relationships throughout life. This is what makes these first years so important and why seeking help should be something more commonplace in our society, without fear of shame or judgement.

Techniques drawn out of psychoanalytic thinking and attachment theory are used alongside play, to put words and feelings to the experiences of the baby and therefore aid the potential for crucial bonding and emotional release.

The clinic welcomes the whole family, as well as parents who simply wish to stay closely attuned to their baby’s inner emotional world.
